Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech: Don’t Settle!

April 13, 2010 · 3 comments

In light of all the hype of Steve’s latest creation: The iPad, I thought it would be fitting to for us to revisit one of the most inspirational speeches I have come across. Steve Jobs is a living example of what it means to follow your dreams and to not settle. I carry a copy of this on my iPhone (and now on my iPad) and listen to it at least every month or so. Maybe on a run, a flight or a long drive. This stuff is so important.

Steve covers three main things:

1. The dots do not connect looking forward, they only connect looking backwards: so trust your gut and have faith moving forward. This belief will give you the courage needed to pursue your dreams.

2. Don’t settle: not with your career, your lover or your friends. Life is too short.

3. Do what you love: it’s the most important thing to get right. And it is NOT cliché.

The life of Steve Jobs is truly an inspiring (and unbelievable) story. Whether you like him, love him, or hate him, it’s hard not to respect him for what he’s done. I recently read his biography, iCon: The Greatest Second Act In the History of Business and had a completely new respect.

Allow yourself to be inspired at least a few times a week, and every day if possible. Start here.

Stay hungry. Stay foolish…

What has Steve Jobs’ story motivated you to accomplish? How are you currently pursuing your dreams? Please share with us in the comments section below.
