Sounds like you've been giving this some real though Shyamli. One thing really stood out in what you just wrote. You said it's dumb to have a job when you can work at home. The only real important thing I think there is to consider when it comes to choosing or changing a career is "Am I doing what I believe I am meant to be doing? Does it light a fire in my belly? Do I love it? Is this how I want to make my dent in the world?"

If the answers to these are yes's, then nothing else matters. Who cares if you're working at home, in an office or at a zoo for that matter. If it creates happiness and fulfillment right now then you've got it. So my question for you is, what's your answer to the above. Working at home or online is not inherently better than something else. You must first define what matters to you, before making a change (or even realizing if a change is what you want).

Hope that helps,
Scott

As of now I have a consultation chamber at my residence.I have fixed hours but have the flexibility to alter it according to my needs. The patient input is dismal because of the location and also bcoz its not a full fledged hospital, therefore less attractive.I have tied up with a nearby hospital for the surgical procedures and indoor tretment of my patients. If I start my own hospital i'll be caught in the 24/7 rut, otherwise I have to make do with my stagnant practice.I am confused how I can make decent amount of money without working unpredictable hours and without compromising on home front.

Thanx Scott!I surely want to practice medicine and help people in my capacity as a gynaec.Somehow I am not inclined to be devoted 24/7 to my profession.I know it sounds paradoxical, being a gynaec and not wanting to put in enough hours and efforts ,when my income is directly proportional to no. of patients i see n no. of surgeries i do.I am quite influenced by the new thot ,one comes across in all the personal development blogs, about how dumb it is to have a job when u can earn money working frm home.I just don't get how i can apply it to my situation and I don't want to start a website!!The place i come frm is still very old-fasioned.

Congrats on being ready to take the next big step Shyamli. I am still not totally sure if you want to keep doing what you're doing but in your own practice or if you want to start something else that is much more in line with balance and family time. Let me know and we'll go from there. There are all kinds of great resources though. As you've seen above, I really do believe that The Four Hour Work Week is one of the very best places to start if someone is looking for a life change.

Awesome to see you diving into this Ryan. I responded to this in much more detail by email so I hope you go that. Tim does a pretty good job of giving step by step direction to go about it but it can be a lot to dive into at first. Let me know how you've progressed since we last spoke and we can go from there. Depending on timing and fit, we might be able to do a little Personal Freedom Coaching to help get you kick started.

Thanks for responding so quickly to my email Scott. After reading 4HWW i've been consumed with trying to quit my job and start something of my own. I know some tools that I lack are knowledge of website design and where/how to start a site of my own. How did you get your start in making this site? The ideas of that book seem simple but I still felt like they are a little over my head, like the idea of putting your idea out first to see if there is a demand for, this makes perfect sense but the tools that Ferriss mentions using to do this are pretty foreign to me and the actual doing seems a bit daunting. Where can I go to get advice tailored to me and my ideas? Oh yea, and how can I get some good ideas?!

Your site is a regular read for me
Thanks again

A reader just emailed me a question and I wanted to share it with all of you just in case you're in a similar situation. Enjoy!

From Reader:

Hey Scott,

I found your site through Scott Young's blog, which I've been reading for over a year. I really dig your site, and how you've combined book reviews with smart advice told in a gripping and effective style. What would you recommend to a 23-year-old who just graduated from college, book-related or otherwise? My primary goal at the moment is to establish my financial independence through creative pursuits, such as writing (I'm currently ghostwriting a personal development book and doing freelance article writing) and music (I am starting a drum teaching practice).

My response:

That's awesome. I am happy to help. What a great spot to be. Scott is an inspiration as well.

Top recommendations:

The 4-Hour Work Week-- Tim Ferriss is brilliant and will inspire you to take action. Go through is new version and be open to trying the stuff he says! It will have a dramatic effect.
http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/escape-9-5-live-anywhere-outsource-your-life-and-join-the-new-rich-updated-4-hour-work-week

Strengths Finder 2.0-- The test that comes with this book is amazing. Will tell you your top 5 natural strengths and how they best apply to possible careers and life in general as well as how you can use them to add value to society. This stuff is so powerful. http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/discover-the-top-5-strengths-that-make-you-personally-excel-strengths-finder-2-0

Start with those and go through them with some intent and have fun at the same time.

An article I recently wrote that covers your current situation in much more depth is The Beginner's Guide to Being Congruent. It has a link to my Strength Finder review and a ton of other take action resources. http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/the-beginners-guide-to-being-congruent

Also if you are getting serious about writing and blogging, then The A-List Bloggers Club is a priceless resource for $20/mo. I've been a member for a while now. They should charge a lot more. http://www.alistbloggingbootcamps.com/

The key to writing is to just start doing it! Ghostwriting is a start but you want to get your name on some things. A blog is a great way to do it and they are super easy to start. That is why I first created RFYS...to write and to share my ideas for others. It's been perfect for that and much more!

Let me know how it goes and have a blast with the process!

Thank you so much for you comment and interest Anisha. And congratulations on your new responsibility!! How exciting. I would be happy to recommend some books if you give me a little more clarity on which life areas you'd like to focus. Based on your email and comments I have a few initial suggestions.

1. Quadruple Your Productivity and Enjoy a Little Life: 8 Steps to Getting Things Done (http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/quadruple-your-productivity-and-enjoy-a-little-life-6-steps-to-getting-things-done)

This is a very useful book and I summarized what I think are some simple productivity practices.

2. The 4 Hour Work Week. An inspiration and motivator on so many levels. Has had the biggest effect on my life yet. http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/escape-9-5-live-anywhere-outsource-your-life-and-join-the-new-rich-updated-4-hour-work-week

3. The 80/20 Principle. Very powerful time management and life enjoyment principles. I did an interview with the author as well.

Living the 80/20 Life: 5 Ways to Achieve More with Less (http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/living-the-8020-life-5-ways-to-achieve-more-with-less)

Author Interview: http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/guidance-from-the-father-of-living-an-8020-life-an-interview-with-richard-koch

4. And if you want some guidance to reading all these books faster and more effectively: http://www.readingforyoursuccess.com/6-quick-steps-to-finishing-a-non-fiction-book-in-half-the-time-while-retaining-twice-as-much

Enjoy your new life transition Anisha and please let me know how else I can help!

Happy Reading,
